Protecting Your Identity Online

In light of the recent Yahoo Security Breach Announcement, we want to share some tips for keeping all of your online accounts secure. As your credit union, we take steps to protect your accounts, cards and private information, keeping them safe and secure.

There are also ways that you can be diligent in protecting your online accounts and your financial well-being. After all, hackers don’t just want to read your emails, they want to learn personal information about you so that they can use your bank accounts, credit cards and identity. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Passwords – as easy as it is to use the same password for each of your accounts, DON’T. It is so important to have a different password for each online account.

  • Having trouble remembering them all? Find a way to store them securely for reference when you need them. There are programs and apps that will help you manage passwords – just do your research and find something you’re comfortable with.
  • Change your passwords regularly so that they don’t get stale. This will increase the security of your accounts.
  • It’s so easy to use your kid’s or pet’s name as your password, but try to steer clear of that. Pick passwords that would be difficult for anyone to guess – maybe something that has a special meaning to you that others don’t know about.

Monitoring Your Accounts – Most email domains and companies have procedures in place to alert you if unusual activity happens on your account, but it is still your responsibility to protect yourself.

  • If you notice unusual activity on any of your email, bank or other accounts that contain sensitive personal information, report it immediately and change your password.
  • Check your credit score regularly. Hackers are smart and even with diligence, things can go unnoticed until it’s too late. Check your credit score at least once per year (it’s free!) and look for anything that’s not correct.
