Nelson Whaley Appointed Board Emeritus After 31 Years of Service

Nelson Whaley has been appointed to the role of Board Emeritus effective June 21, 2021. Whaley transitions to Board Emeritus after 31 years on Gulf Winds’ Board of Directors. During his time on the board, he acted in leadership roles including First Vice Chairman and Secretary. As an Emeritus Official, Nelson will serve as an advisor to the board of directors and offer guidance based on his experience and expertise in the financial industry.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed serving with Nelson the last 31 years,” said Board Chair R.L. “Ozzie” Oswald, Sr. “He has been committed to what our credit union stands for, People Helping People.”

Whaley was one of Gulf Winds’ first members, at the time called Chemstrand Employees Credit Union. He graduated from Jay High School in 1954 and soon after started working at new Chemstrand plant, where he spent most of his career in the sheet metal shop.

“Gulf Winds Credit Union means a lot to me,” says Whaley. “I appreciate the opportunity that I’ve been given to work with the other members of the Board all of these years. I’ve always been interested in helping our members and being able to give back to the people in our communities who are less fortunate.”

The Emeritus Program is available to board members who have served Gulf Winds Credit Union for at least 30 years. This program invites previous board members to attend board meetings and bring their advice to any meeting they wish to attend. Whaley plans to remain involved at Gulf Winds and will continue attending board meetings to help advise the current directors.

“Nelson has been a critical part of the Gulf Winds Board of Directors,” said Chris Rutledge, CEO/President of Gulf Winds Credit Union. “We are so excited to honor him as Board Emeritus.”
