A Front-Row Seat to the Credit Union Movement: My First GAC as a Crasher

Attending my first Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) as a Crasher was more than just a professional milestone. It was an experience that shifted my perspective on the credit union movement and my place within it.

Walking into GAC, I expected to learn. What I did not expect was to leave feeling energized, connected, and deeply inspired by the people who make this industry what it is.

Having the opportunity to attend as a Crasher made the experience even more impactful. It provided space to engage deeply, build meaningful connections, and gain insight from leaders across the movement in a way that felt intentional and immersive.

From the very beginning, it was clear that GAC is where advocacy meets purpose. Being surrounded by leaders, innovators, and passionate professionals reminded me that credit unions are more than financial institutions. They are a movement built on people helping people.

Throughout the week, I had the chance to connect with individuals shaping the future of our industry. What stood out most was not their knowledge or titles, but their willingness to share, mentor, and genuinely connect. Those conversations reinforced something powerful. Relationships are at the heart of everything we do.

One of the most impactful takeaways was the sense of authenticity in every room. People shared experiences, challenges, and ideas with honesty that you do not always see in professional settings. It created an environment where growth felt natural and where emerging leaders like myself were encouraged to step into bigger roles.

As someone working in marketing within the credit union space, it was especially meaningful to see how storytelling, advocacy, and member impact all intersect. Every conversation, session, and connection pointed back to one central mission. Serving our members and protecting their financial well-being.

GAC also reinforced the importance of showing up, whether it is advocating on Capitol Hill, engaging in our communities, or continuing to learn and grow within the movement. There is a clear path for young professionals who want to lead in this space, and experiences like GAC help make that path visible.

The energy throughout the week was centered around a powerful message. Protecting our members’ path to economic freedom. It is a mission that feels more important than ever and one I am proud to be a part of.

It was a true pleasure and honor to meet 70 other Crashers who showed honesty and vulnerability, not just about their professional experiences, but about their lives. That openness created meaningful connections and reminded me that leadership is about courage, empathy, and authenticity.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have attended GAC 2026 as a Crasher and to represent Gulf Winds Credit Union. A special thank you to Filene Research Institute for creating this program and to Gulf Winds Credit Union for making it possible. This experience did not just deepen my understanding of the credit union movement. It strengthened my commitment to it.
