How to Prioritize Your Holiday Shopping Without Breaking the Budget

Posted on Monday, Nov 25, 2013

It’s no secret that the holidays can induce stress, especially when it comes to your finances. During this extra busy time of year, many of us spend more than usual buying gifts and visiting family. Whether you are shopping for one or for many, holiday gifts add an extra expense to your normal budget. Here are few hints to help you prioritize your holiday shopping without breaking the bank.

Plan, plan, plan
This is the biggest step in prioritizing your shopping. You may prefer to write a list of how much you can spend on each person or create an overall budget to deduct from, but however you manage, it’s essential to financially prepare for the season of spending.

Avoid impulse purchases
We’ve all been here: While in the store, you start tossing more items in your cart than you planned without thinking; Or you see something sentimental and ignore your budget for a high-price gift. It’s easy stray from your original plan, but its imperative to stay on track. Avoid a bad case of buyers’ remorse this season, and avoid impulse purchases.

Make time
It sounds easy enough, but holiday shopping can be a lot of work. Make a plan to spread out your shopping outings. No one wants to feel exhausted after spending an entire day running around town for gifts. Restore the fun in buying gifts for friends and family! Make two or three rounds of shopping over a longer period of time to reduce stress leading up to the holidays.

Stay calm
Between working, parenting or going to school, sometimes it’s difficult to stay calm during the holidays. But it’s important to remember: the gifts you give will be well received and appreciated. Instead of worrying and spending hours holiday shopping, remember to take deep breaths and stay calm. It’s supposed to be a time of celebration, appreciation and relaxation.

Holiday shopping can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to put you in the hole financially. Working within your means, and creating a plan based on your budget, can simplify the process.
